Cavy Health Care

On this page you'll find details on cavy illnesses, ailments and injuries and the recommended course of action to take. Please be sure to read my disclaimer before you proceed and remember that if you are ever in doubt, take your cavy to see a qualified (and preferably an exotics) vet immediately.

Cavies are prey animals and therefore hide their illness until they are extremely ill to avoid predators picking them out as the weakest of the herd. It is very important to remember this when your cavy is ill, as it usually means that they have been ill for a while and need help straight away - never delay in taking your cavy to the vet.

Emergencies

If your cavy shows any of the following symptoms contact your vet immediately:

  • Makes any sort of noise when breathing
  • Is bleeding or shows signs of having been bleeding
  • Cannot or will not eat
  • Cannot or will not drink
  • Seems to be in pain
